Unidentified Pink Ooze on Remote Tasmanian Beach Prompts Fears of Potential Algae Outbreak
Officials in the island state are striving to determine a pink slime that has surfaced on a isolated coast, with certain experts concerned it could be an phytoplankton proliferation.
Widespread Occurrence Across Coastline
The pink-tinged sludge was found on a portion of a coastal area about 60km south of the city. A similar sludge has also been documented on areas of another local beach and Little Taylors Bay.
Samples Gathered for Analysis
Samples have been collected and provided to the Environment Protection Authority for analysis. A representative commented that "algal blooms are a natural occurrence in response to variations in food sources, warmth, precipitation or sunlight".
"They are at times called crimson or rosy tides because the outbreaks can change the water red," the spokesperson added. "Only some algal blooms are toxic, with several kinds serving as a major source of nourishment for marine life in the marine food web."
"The usual source of red tides in these seas is the sea plant Noctiluca scintillans, which can cause bioluminescent light displays at night."
Increasing Rate Associated with Climate Change
Algae outbreaks are natural events but their rate has increased in recent years, partly due to global warming and contamination that combine to create food-loaded oceans primed for the fast proliferation of dinoflagellates.
Dinoflagellates are a marine plant that typically act as the ocean's waste processors. During a proliferation, there is a quick expansion in their populations that disrupts the healthy balance of aquatic systems.
These events have been compared to subsurface wildfires and can persist in growing as long as circumstances are favorable. In severe cases, sensitive marine ecosystems can be wiped out as marine life is killed or deprived of oxygen, providing more food for the outbreak.
Previous Severe Bloom in a neighboring state
A southern state in the past dealt with a severe phytoplankton proliferation along its southern coastline after a string of oceanic warm spells, which expanded across a vast area. The bloom left swimmers with irritated eyes and hacking coughs and may have caused the death of up to a quarter-million sea creatures across 400 different species, according to agency assessments.
Specialist Analysis on the Tasmanian Situation
A marine expert, who assisted in examining the start of that algal bloom said, based on pictures of the local event, the likely culprit involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a form of dinoflagellate also known as "sea sparkle".
"There are lots of these outbreaks around Tassie of late," she added.
Coleman said sea sparkle did not generate poisons similar to the type involved in the previous devastating event, but it does eat small invertebrates and "lots of fish eggs", meaning aquatic creatures were particularly vulnerable.
"Typically one notices a outbreak of the organism after a bloom of another organism, or something like a salmon or coral spawning event," she noted.
Calls for Investigation and Safety Concerns
A marine scientist, who gathered specimens of the pink sludge in Tasmania, said it seemed the possible outbreak had "expanded greatly" and proposed the fish farming business was the most likely culprit, pointing to comparable events in other places.
"Thus we needs to deliver a strong warning here, the authorities and the EPA need to react to this. We need to study the examples we've gathered and we need to inform the community here," she emphasized.
She expressed she had anxieties for public safety after experiencing a tingling sensation along her body while being splashed with tainted seawater.
Claims of Dead Sea Creatures and Appeals for Leadership Intervention
An advocacy organization has documented dead octopus and deceased marine life washing ashore, with a prominent conservationist describing the circumstances as an "environmental emergency" and demanding the state premier to visit and "lead the response that government must be undertaking".
"The leader needs to understand this is a disaster in the unfolding, commercially as well as environmentally."
Government Statement
Addressing the media, the official said he was not aware of any relationships between the event and the farming business, saying laboratory analysis was required before determinations could be drawn.
"We must make certain our rivers and seas are ecologically sound and viable," he said.
"The 1,200 beaches across the island are our treasures and we need to guarantee the people and our business sector can operate side-by-side to use our aquatic resources productively and responsibly."
